Take immediate measures to curb cholera, Tarigami | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 29 : Expressing serious concern over the outbreak of cholera and gastroenteritis in many areas of Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara and Doda districts of Kashmir, the CPI (M) has asked the state government to formulate a comprehensive contingency plan and to take immediate measures to curb the disease. Four deaths and over 1000 cases of the diseases were reported from different parts of the valley during the past two week. In a statement issued here today, the CPI(M) state secretary Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has criticised the department of health for sleeping over the issue and delaying the notification of the disease to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Stating that reports about spread of disease to other areas of the Valley are worrisome, Tarigami demanded an immediate intervention of the health department to prevent the disease from engulfing other areas. Urging the government to awake the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department from its deep slumber, he said the supply of safe drinking water should be ensured so that such diseases do not outbreak in future. In most of the areas the water supplied to the people is unsafe because of the lack of filtration facilities. Despite tall claims of spending huge sums of money for safe drinking water, the fact remains that the PHE infrastructure like reservoirs and filtration plants are mostly non-existent and wherever such plants exist they are unsafe having almost no facilities, he added. The CPI (M) state secretary also stressed on the need for an awareness programme among the people living in the disease affected areas about the safety measures required to be taken.
