LOOK AFTER THE PRIDE OF MARTYRS | POLICE MEMORIAL IN NEED OF REPAIR | | WHEN men in uniform attain martyrdom and their mortal remains return home wrapped in Indian tricolour patriotic spirit touches a new high and people from all walks of life including senior police officers and politicians rush to pay homage and sympathise with the next kith and kin of martyrs. The make tall promises and pledge all possible support to look after the families of martyrs. Jammu and Kashmir police, fighting insurgency for over twenty years, had dedicated one of the biggest police memorial in the memory of policemen who laid down their lives in their line of duty in the month of January 2008 in Jammu. After spending a hefty amount on the construction of the police memorial, the Jammu and Kashmir Police housing corporation had thrown it open for the common visitors. To inspire the coming generations a grand ceremony was organised and homages were once again paid to the brave soldiers. The families of the martyrs were also honoured on the special occasion. The idea was to generate awareness among the common massess and provide an opportunity to the common people to learn about the supreme sacrifices of these brave soldiers and instil feeling of patriotism among the new generation. The names of police martyrs who attained martyrdom in the last 20 years were scribbled on the wall of honour to motivate visitors who thronged the memorial. The names were engraved on the wall of honour for posterity. But vagaries of time and utter neglect shown by the police department in the last two years has robbed this majestic memorial of its aesthetic grandeur. With each passing day the police memorial is losing its sheen and beauty. Already large number of marble tiles, building blocks of four pillars are found missing adding to the shabby look of the memorial. At the time of the inauguration of the memorial the authorities had promised to make arrangements for lighting Amar Jawan Jyoti but till date no such provision has been made at the memorial site. Located near the Jammu railway station the memorial is frequented by large number of visitors each day but majority of them go back with a heavy heart. Stepping out of the memorial the visitors often complain about the lack of maintenance of the police memorial and regard it as a shameful act on the part of those responsible officers who have been entrusted with the task of maintaining it. The construction agency, J&K Police Housing Corporation and the other police authorities are virtually turning a blind eye and not coming forward to repair the police memorial even though large number of senior officers who live in the vicinity pass through the memorial on number of occasions. Family members of the police martyrs are angry with the construction agency for using the poor construction material and neglecting the police memorial. Ironically, the same police department spend lavishly on media awareness campaigns and indulge in several other unproductive pursuits but do not bother to look after the police memorial. Same is true about large number of other memorials erected in the memory of 'Saheed sainiks' and others during the Kargil war. There is no dearth of these memorials on Jammu RS Pura road, Jammu Akhnoor road and other areas but till date no one has spared a thought to form a central agency which can undertake the task of beautifying these landmarks and glorify them by maintaining them on daily basis so as to inspire the young generation and fill them with the spirit of pride and nationhood.Until we learn to respect our brave soldiers and pay due homage to them we cannot really inspire young generations to sacrifice their life in the line of duty for the mother nation.
