GDC Samba students demand adequate facilities | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 3: Government Degree College (GDC) Samba is still vying for the required basic facilities even its transfer in the new building this year. The college was shifted in the new building on July 1, 2010 fulfilling the long pending demand of the students and local people. Students are joyous over the shifting of the college but talking to Early Times they said that there are many problems being faced by them. Main demand they raised is of non availability of proper facility of potable water, besides toilets remains locked for reasons best known to the authorities. Students stated that this year Science subjects were introduced in the college but the laboratories are still to be provided. The students while expressing satisfaction over getting new building said that though we know that the college is in its initial stage, still the administration should work on war footing to mitigate these problems. They also said that the district administration should order transport authorities to make new bus stop near the college exclusively for the students. Principal of the college Savitri Devi said that we have done much in few months of its inception, the problems of water, toilet facilities, and sanitation would be solved soon as the work on them is going on. The college in Samba was inaugurated almost five years ago by the then Chief Minister of the state Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on May 22, 2005. The college was earlier housed in the building of Government Higher Secondary School Samba in Samba fort. GDC Samba has been a victim of alleged government apathy because it took almost five years to shift the college in the new building. The authorities instead of shifting the school from the fort premises started college in only four rooms and with five subjects. Students of the college along with local residents had protested many times for the allotment of new building. After many representations and appeals to the state government, construction was started near river Basantar along with National Highway 1-A after that. But the construction was stopped because of objection by the Army. After the interference of Minister for Higher Education Abdul Ghani Malik, the construction work was re-started almost one year ago.
