Highway plantation is hanging for want of funds | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 3: In a tussle between two government departments regarding plantation saplings of the trees along the National Highway 1-A from Lakhanpur to Jammu, actual loser is the fast deteriorating environment due to air pollution and various other reasons. It is pertinent to mention here that almost 15 thousand trees were cut for widening of the National Highway 1-A from Lakhanpur to Samba distancing 58 kilometers. To compensate the loss of trees, the State Forest Department had sent a proposal of planting 45 thousand saplings along the NH 1A at a cost of Rs 3 crores. The plan was to plant 15 thousand ornamental trees and 30 thousand Sagwan trees. Unfortunately the proposal is still hanging for want of more funds as demanded by the Highway authorities. Because of tussle between these two departments, the rainy season is on its last stage in the state. Divisional Forest Officer, Jammu BK Bhagat, said that the forest department was in constant touch with the Highway authorities for plantation process. Project Director, National Highway Authority M K Jain said that the proposed expenditure is very large; it is not possible for us to spend such a huge sum for plantation. If any voluntary organization extends financial support to us, we would start plantation in January. He also said that Rs 70 lakhs has already been spent for plantation purpose from NH 1-A Narwal to Vijaypur.
