Admiral Ramdas, Agnivesh make move for peace in Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT NEW DELHI, Sept 3: A civil society delegation led by eminent persons like former Naval Chief Admiral Ramdas and Swami Agnivesh among others has demanded after its return here today from Kashmir an independent probe into all killings in the Valley since the alleged encounter at Macchil near Kupwara in April this year. The delegates who spent three days at Srinagar meeting a cross-section of people covering different shades of opinion released a two-page signed statement here making nine recommendations to end over two-decade-long strife in the border State. Besides independent inquiry into recent deaths in the Valley the civil society group demanded release of political prisoners; withdrawal of cases against protestors; revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, Disturbed Areas Act and Public Safety Act; withdrawal of troops both from Army and Central paramilitary forces from civilian areas; end of use of lethal weapons against peaceful protestors; total shunning of violence from both sides; engagement for reconciliation through an immediate visit by an all party Parliamentary delegation; and resumption of a sustained dialogue to find a solution to the long standing issue faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The civil society delegates included social activist Mohini Giri, catholic priest Father Dominic Emmanuel, Hyderabad-based journalist Dr Mazhar Hussain besides Admiral Ramdas and Swami Agnivesh. The delegation met some of the injured persons recuperating in hospitals after the recent spate of stone throwing and police firing, leaders of separatist groups as also mainstream politicos, religious leaders, professionals, and journalists. Among the prominent people with whom the delegation interacted included Governor NN Vohra, former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Omar Farooq, Yasin Malik, Maulana Shukat from Ahle-Hadis sect, Yusuf Tarigami besides State Ministers like AR Rather, AM Sagar and Taj Mohiuddin. The statement released by the visiting group here said that “there was not much clarity or consensus about what the people of the Valley meant by Azadi. It varied from withdrawal of gun to autonomy of the State to independence from the Indian State. Yet none mentioned about merging with Pakistan. “Any holistic situation and proper solution to the issue will have to take into consideration the interests of all the regions of the State – Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh – and this will be one of the main challenges for any attempt that could provide a meaningful lasting and just solution.” The delegation urged the Central Government to start building confidence and initiate the process of dialogue in an uninterrupted manner.
