Learn to respect your teacher
9/3/2010 11:56:53 PM

5th September is the birthday of a great teacher Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. When Dr. Radhakrishnan became the president of India in 1962, some of his students and friends approached him and requested him to allow them to celebrate 5th September, his "birthday". In reply, Dr, Radhakrishnan said, "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers' day". The request showed Dr.Radhakrishnan's love for the teaching profession. From then onwards, the day has been observed as Teachers' Day in India.

But over the years the institution of a teacher has taken a big hit.

Despite making serious attempts the state and the centre governments have failed to attract best of the talent available in the market to join their educational institutions.

Those who were available in the educational institutions were burdened by the successive governments at the centre to deliver their ambitious schemes apart from imparting education.

In a remote district of a country a local teacher is more than a friend philosopher and guide to villagers.

He is respected as one of the most important person in that society due to his sheer dedication and emotional attachment with the children and their families.

He write letters for them, invite government officers to provide better facilities, look after the needs of the elderly citizens where ever required.

In urban setting the role of a teacher has undergone a sea change.

He is regarded as one professional who can really give wings to the dreams of the students and act as a bridge between the parents and the children.

Unfortunately, despite indulging in multitasking the teachers have not received their due and figure little below the ladder in a list of successful carer options.

It is because of this, educational institutions are finding it difficult to fill the vacancies with ignited minds who can steer destiny of their children.

Starting from medical. engineering, managements, design, arts, commerce, almost every faculty is facing shortfall of teachers thereby adding to woes of hapless students across central , state universities, professional and state run educational institutions.

If young professionals are blamed for not accepting the challenge of joining the teaching faculty part of the blame also lies with our faulty policy making.

The policy makers have failed to offer sops to the noble profession to motivate all those youngsters who wanted to adopt teaching profession but changed tracks as they found it unproductive option as compared to other professions.

Dr Radhakhrishnan himself believed that "teachers should be the best minds in the country" but looking at the fresh crop of teachers we cannot say for sure that in todays time the noble profession is attracting the best of the minds.

Over the years the student teacher relationship in India has also taken a big hit. The new age students and teachers do not share the bond unlike their predecessors.

Few black sheeps have discredited the noble profession by treating their students as easy fodder.

With the advent of the information and technology and modern teaching aids the class room atmosphere has also undergone a sea change.

Since times immemorial, Indians have respected and idolized their teachers. Earlier, we used to call our teachers 'Guru' and now it's the contemporary 'Sir' or 'Madam'. Nevertheless, the role of teachers has remained the same. They were, are and will continue to be our guiding light, creating conditions conducive to our overall development.

On this day we must take pledge to reform the system and help the teachers show right path to our children lest our children will fall prey to the ills of the society.Learn to respect your teachers and do not ever forget them as they are the real guides.
