If Omar has failed, Mahbooba has not succeeded | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 3: The leader of opposition Mahbooba Mufti has been accusing Omar Abdullah of failure at all fronts. She has even ridiculed National Conference's autonomy demand. According to her, Self Rule was the best possible solution to the vexed problem. However, many people do not know about formula and those who know say "only tribals aspire for Self Rule". Mahbooba Mufti forgot her favourite slogan during the on-going agitation. Demilitarization no longer is on the priority list of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The focus has shifted to human rights abuses. If Omar Abdullah's autonomy balloon has been punctured by the people of Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir, Mufti's Self Rule has not found any takers across the state. And more importantly, Mahbooba has almost given up her demand of demilitarization. Mahbooba demanded demilitarization when Parvez Musharraf's four-point-formula was widely discussed in the sub-continent. She demanded restoration of 1988 position. In 1988 the troops were in the barracks. Apparently this was not too big a demand but New Delhi ignored in the same way it had ignored NC's autonomy document. New Delhi, therefore, is not ready to give 1988 position to Mahbooba. The troops have gone into interiors since then and with militancy not yet over, the troop-s cannot vacate strategic positions. How can, New Delhi, therefore, go back to 1953 to fulfil NC's autonomy demand? And why shall government of India oblige Omar Abdullah or Mahbooba Mufti. Mirwaiz Umer Farooq has also been demanding demilitarization. He is an important player in contemporary Kashmir. Mahbooba is also important but in a different capacity. She has been desperately trying to project a `separatist' face of her organization. But, the people know her and her party and so does New Delhi. Why should New go for demilitarization on her demand? If at all New Delhi agrees for it, every possible step shall be taken to ensure that the credit goes to Mirwaiz. Similarly why should New Delhi give autonomy to Omar Abdullah? Omar Abdullah is the Chief Minister but in today's Kashmir somebody else has been calling the shots. Omar and Mahbooba owe allegiance to the constitution of India and one who does that cannot be close to the people of Kashmir. This is the psyche, rather tragedy of Kashmir. |
