Srinagar airport closed, flights to operate from Awantipora | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 3: As the Srinagar international airport was closed for upgradation and repairs, the air traffic had been diverted to IAF's technical airport at Awantipora. The Srinagar airport was closed for 12 days for upgradation and repairs, an official of Airport Authority of India (AAI) said. "All the inbound flights to Srinagar will be landing at Awantipora airport till the works at the Srinagar airport are completed," he added. GoAir is the only airline which would continue its two flights daily to and from Srinagar during the closure period even as most of the airlines flying to Srinagar had cut their operations till September 15. Indian Airlines would operate a total of only three flights to Srinagar from Delhi and Jammu till September 15. Earlier, it was flying to Srinagar twice daily from Delhi. "We will have Srinagar-Delhi flights operation via Jammu on September 6, 9 and 12. There will be no flights on other days and a decision on operations will be taken only after assessing the speed of work at the Srinagar Airport," an official of the airline said. Jet Airways has cancelled all the flights till September 6 with an official of the airline saying a decisionon resuming flights to Srinagar will be taken after that. The Srinagar International Airport, which is maintained by the Ministry of Defence, was closed for maintenance and repair works on the tarmac and runway. The works are likely to be completed by September 15, officials said. The repair work was earlier scheduled to be carried out in June this year but it was deferred after chief minister Omar Abdullah pleaded the Centre that closure of airport would affect the tourist season. The flights were operated hassle free from Awantipora airport as per schedule today. The administration had put all the arrangements in place to facilitate the passengers. According to a spokesman, passengers are checked in at Srinagar Airport and transported to Awantipora airport for boarding in the flights to different destinations. Meanwhile, he clarified that no passenger should directly report at Awantipora airport as checking of luggage and frisking of passengers has to be necessarily carried out at Srinagar Airport. |
