Cab driver murdered, body found from nullah at Nagrota
9/4/2010 12:07:41 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 3: In the typical style of highway robbers who on more than one occasion murdered truck drivers and decamped with their vehicles on the Jammu-Kathua road about a decade back, a 23-year-old Indica taxi driver was found murdered ruthlessly in a nullah in Manda forests of Nagrota, about 14 km from here on the Jammu-Udhampur road, this morning. After killing him, the accused took away his Indica cab (JK02X/5270) too, according to additional SP (rural) Mohan Lal. The victim -- Gurpreet Singh (23), son of Mohan Singh (tanker driver) -- hailed from sector 6 of Nanak Nagar. He had deep stab wounds in the head and on the face. The additional SP said three persons hired Gurpreet's Indica from Katra taxi stand at about 11.50 am Thursday.
The accused were suspected to be from Punjab as they spoke in Punjabi while negotiating the fare, he added, quoting another taxi driver who had heard the conversation between them. Asked if the accused were Vaishno Devi pilgrims, he said it was not yet known.
They had probably hired the taxi with the intention of killing its driver and then taking away the vehicle, Mohan Lal said. The accused must have taken him from one place to another around Katra till the night fell and then finding an opportunity, they must have killed him and then thrown his body in the nullah late Thursday night.
The body was sighted in the nullah at about 8.30 am today by some passersby, who informed Nagrota police station. The additional SP said a police party soon reached the spot and evacuated the body to the mortuary of the GMC hospital.
He said there were deep wounds in the head and on the face. After his identity was established, family members were informed, he added, saying post-mortem was conducted in their presence. The body would be handed over to them for last rites tomorrow morning.
Mohan Lal said a murder case had been registered in this connection. Efforts were being made to identify the accused, he added.
