Early Times Report
Rajouri, Sept 4: Pahari speaking people of twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri have come up with a new demand –restoration of State status to Poonch. Struggling for the scheduled tribe status for the last more than 20 years, Pahari community has now decided to launch movement for restoration of state status to Poonch
The community is of the view that Poonch state must be restored so that they can decide their fate on its own.Annoyed with the government, this community has forwarded either option to settle their problems. One to provide them scheduled tribe status or restore the status of Poonch state. They have cautioned that if any of the option was not given to them by the government, they are ready to take any step in future.
Talking to Early Times , Chief Executive of Pahari Peoples Movement Shahbaz Khan said that Pahari people are more backward than the Gujjars of the area. He contended that all Gujjars are governing Poonch and Rajouri in every department and maximum families of Gujjars are the creamy layer in the society. On the other hand, he said that Pahari speaking people are deprived of their rights. “When both the communities are living in similar environment, both are receiving education from the same school and both are getting equal amenities, than why Pahari people are not being included in the list of the tribal community?”, Khan questioned, adding that they have held meetings in this regard and they have decided to intensify its struggle.
Giving ultimatum to the government, Shahbaz Khan said that if government is not in favour of providing them the status of scheduled tribe than the status of Poonch should be given back to them. He said that it was a state before 1947 and its status should be restored before election.
Asserting that they do not want self rule, autonomy nor are for independent Kashmir, Khan said that they only demand ST Status which, according to him is their basic right.
