Jammu and Kashmir Congress in self-destruction mode | NC MAN YOUTH CONGRESS PRESIDENT | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 4: Resentment is brewing among the Jammu-based youth Congress leaders and workers. What has angered them all the more was the "mind-boggling" decision of the Congress high command to impose on them a Kashmir-based NC worker Shoib Lone. Shoaib Lone was appointed president of the youth wing of the Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir only recently. Sources close to the Jammu-based senior youth Congress leaders have revealed that they and the youth Congress workers are unhappy with the Congress high command for three main reasons. One is that the "core constituency of the Congress is Jammu, and not Kashmir, and, hence, by appointing a Kashmir-based non-Congress leader as president of the youth Congress, the Congress high command has not only damaged the Congress party in Jammu province, but has also overlooked the contribution of those in Jammu who have been working for the party in the region for years now." "The Congress high command has humiliated them by imposing on them someone who has been trained a religio-political seminary, which is dominated by those who stand for autonomy and self-rule (read limited accession of Jammu and Kashmir with India), " the sources close to them have told this scribe. The other is that "since the president of the JKPCC is from Kashmir, it was incumbent on the part of the Congress high command to appoint someone from Jammu as president of the youth wing of the Congress." "By ignoring the claim of the Jammu-based youth Congress leaders to the position of president of the youth wing, the Congress high command has sent a signal that it only cares for Kashmir," the sources have told this scribe. The third objection of the Jammu-based youth Congress leaders against Shoaib Lone is that "he knows nothing about the Congress culture, as also about the sensitivities of the people of Jammu and Ladakh." The anger and bitterness of the Jammu-based youth Congress leaders and workers is, it appears, not misplaced when viewed in the light of the facts the sources within the youth wing of the Congress reveal. They do make a point when they oppose the appointment of Shoaib Lone, of course, on the condition of anonymity, saying that the "credentials of Lone are doubtful" and that "his appointment would prove counter-productive in the long run." It would be only appropriate to refer to here certain facts as revealed by the angry youth Congress leaders on the condition of anonymity. The facts are many. Some of them are (1) Shoaib Lone join the NC only on April 4, 2009 at the resident of Dr Farooq Abdullah, where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and minister Sakina Ittoo were also present; (2) earlier, he was with the PDP and "no one knows whether he left this party or he was hounded out of the PDP"; (3) "Shoaib Lone has never resigned from the NC and the position right now is that a NC worker is today heading the youth wing of the Congress party"; (4) "it is indeed disgusting that the 125-year-old Congress party doesn't have a single youth Congress leader in Jammu who could be considered suitable for leading the youth wing of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir" and that it had to "borrow the services of Lone"; (5) "till date, Lone has not visited the disturbed Valley after taking over as president of the youth wing, despite the fact that his area of activity is Kashmir and that he, instead of helping the government to restore peace and calm in the disturbed Valley, is camping in Jammu"; (6) "if at all he has gone to Kashmir, his whereabouts are unknown in the sense that nothing has appeared in the press that could even remotely suggest that he is undertaking activities in Kashmir designed to help the government and expand the support-base of the Congress party"; (7) "Lone has been, instead of defending the national cause, playing the Kashmir-centric politics in Jammu, thus seeking to vitiate the peaceful environment in this region"; "R S Pathania, senior vice-president, youth Congress, who has been given an independent charge in the Jammu province, is not being allowed by Lone to function in the manner he wants in order to strengthen the Congress at the grassroots level"; and (8) "Shoaib, who had said in Delhi that he would go to Kashmir and snatch stones from the stone-throwers", according to sources within the youth Congress, "is trying to get material and monetary support", "wants his entire family to shift to Jammu on the plea that his family is under threat at the government expanses" and "also wants a government accommodation for his family." One may or may not endorse all these facts as told to this scribe by sources within the youth Congress. But one cannot also dismiss these facts summarily. There appears some substance in them. The Congress high command would do well to take note of these facts and take some appropriate steps so that the youth Congress is strengthened In Jammu and Kashmir. |
