Low participation of girls in Inter College sports worrisome | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sep 11: In the ongoing Inter Collegiate Tournaments/Competition-2010 of various colleges affiliated with the Jammu University (JU) and organized by Directorate of Sports and Physical Education (JU), the participation of the girl students is far below than their male counterparts. There are 166 colleges (Government and Private) including private B. Ed colleges affiliated with the Jammu University which are supposed to participate in different events. Inter Collegiate Tournaments/Competition-2010 started on September 7, 2010 and will continue up to January 30, 2011. The overall condition of the sports as far as participation of girls is considered is worrisome. Out of 166 colleges, only 39 colleges had given their entries for different team events and 72 in open individual events. The condition is far below than the expected by having a glance over the participation. In cricket, 7 women teams are participating against 30 men teams, in hockey women teams are only while those of men are 14, in handball 7 women teams are participating against 14 men teams, in tennis 8 men teams are participating against none of women, in Kabbadi there are 9 women teams against 23 men teams. Similarly, in volleyball the number of women teams is 16 while that of women is 31, in basketball 8 women teams are participating against 14 men teams, in football the number of men teams is 19 while number of women teams is only 5, in table tennis women teams are 18 against 22 men teams and in chess women teams are 16 while those of men are 22. As far as individual events are concerned, women participation is again far below than their counterparts. The events included swimming, cross country, weight lifting, boxing, wrestling, shooting, gymnastics, athletics, fencing and judo. In some games like weight lifting, boxing, shooting, there is no entry from women. The popularity of the sports in other parts of the country is increasing day by day and the youth is very interesting to participate in the sports activities. But the participation of the girls is far below in the field. Physical Director, JU, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau, said that parents of the girls in many cases discourage the girls in sports out of social compulsion, which is negative thing. However, he advised the sports persons among girls to avail the facilities in their colleges and JU for development of sports scenario besides their physical development.
