Jammu celebrates Eid, Ganesh Chaturthi with religious fervour
9/11/2010 11:20:52 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sep 11: Muslims and Hindus of Jammu city today celebrated Eid and Ganesh Chaturthi with traditional religious fervour and zeal.
Muslims poured into small and huge mosques for the morning Eid namaz. Muslim men and children clad in new clothes offered prayers at Idgah and other mosques in the city.
However, the biggest congregations in the winter capital of the state took place at Eidgah and Jamia Masjid, Talab Khatikan.
Once the prayers got over, a sea of mainly young and elderly males with skullcaps streamed out of the mosques to embrace one another and offer Eid greetings. At several places, Hindus were seen greeting their Muslim brethren on the occasion.
“Jammuites once again displayed an unparalleled communal harmony as both Hindus and Muslims celebrated their respective festivals and extended warm greetings to each other.” said Shahzad.
Even before Eid prayers began, Hindus armed with flowers and coconuts began visiting temples to offer prayers to the elephant-headed Lord Ganesha to mark Ganesh Chaturthi.
While the event was marked with the most exuberance in Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra, the celebrations also took place here.
The idols of Lord Ganesha with different shapes and sizes have been placed at Parade Ground by Bharatiya Vedic Sansthan, Jammu. The idols, which were to be immersed after ten days, have brought from different places of the country.
A Ras Leel function was organized later in the evening to mark the occasion.
