Construct Jammu House in Delhi to accommodate Jammu
KASHMIR HOUSES ONLY FOR KASHMIRIS
9/11/2010 11:25:26 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Sept 11: Jammu and Kashmir Government has two houses in Delhi for catering to needs of those from Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh who have to visit Delhi for work official or otherwise; who cannot stay in hotels or who do not have their relatives in the union capital. One House is at the Prithavi Raj Road and the other in the posh Chankayapuri, adjoining the prestigious Race Course. The Prime Minister lives in this area. Every state in the country has constructed such Houses in Delhi to meet the demands of the concerned people and officials, who cannot afford to stay in the hotels and guest houses because it is a very costly affair.
Not-so-long ago there used to be only one such House in Delhi, called Kashmir House. It was located at the Prithavi Raj Road. It was a small building and it also housed the office of the Resident Commissioner. This House had become the sole preserve of visitors from Kashmir, with the visiting people of Jammu being shown the door on the ground that no room was available. Since it failed to meet the needs of the people, the state government constructed one more House in Chankayapuri some two decades ago. It is also known as the Kashmir House. It consists of three huge buildings and can accommodate many, many people at a time.
When the newly-constructed Kashmir House became functional it was hoped that those from Jammu visiting Delhi would get accommodation and overcome the problem they hitherto faced. This hope soon dashed to the ground, with those from Kashmir visiting Delhi occupying almost all the rooms in the newly-constructed Kashmir House and staying put there for days and days together. Not just leaders belonging to the Kashmir-based parties would occupy these rooms, but even petty workers belonging to these parties would occupy most of the rooms. In other words, accommodation both in both the Kashmir Houses was readily available to the people from Kashmir belonging to a particular community. They would avail themselves of all the subsidies.
To be more precise, Jammu and Ladakh were denied accommodation when there in Delhi existed just one House and they are being denied accommodation today as well when there exists now a huge Kashmir House in the Chankayapuri area. You go to the Chankayapuri Kashmir House anytime and you would find the same being occupied by political leaders and workers from Kashmir, as also by other Kashmiris. Yes, you would also find a handful of persons from Jammu, mostly ministers and legislators and that's all. The fact is that both the Kashmir Houses in Delhi have become the sole preserve of the people of Kashmir. Ask the government to issue a while paper on this issue and you will see for yourself the discriminatory attitude of the concerned authorities towards the people of Jammu and Ladakh who go to the Kashmir Houses for accommodation but are refused accommodation due to the non-availability of rooms.
Let the people of Kashmir occupy both these Houses and enjoy government hospitality. There is no problem. But, at the same time, the state government should construct a huge House in Delhi meant exclusively for the people of Jammu and Ladakh. The state government cannot treat them shabbily. The Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand belongs to the Congress party. He also hails from Jammu. He and other Jammu-based Ministers should take cognizance of the problems of the people of these two regions and make the government construct a Jammu House in Delhi so that the people of this province and Ladakh get accommodation as and when they need it. It is their duty to fight out discriminatory and humiliating policies being pursued ruthlessly by the concerned authorities.
