Jammu District Sports Climbing meet concludes
Simran, Abhishek excel in sub-junior group

JAMMU, Sept 26: Simran Khajuria of Shangrilla Higher Secondary School and Abhishek Slathia of Oriental Academy emerge new sub junior girls and boys champion respectively in the two-day 10th Jammu District Sport Climbing competition held under the banner of Mountaineering Association of J&K at Sprawling Buds School, Chinore here.
In one of the finest competitions of the championship, Simran Khajuria of Shangrilla School and Shivani Thakarwal of Sprawling Buds School were tied at the first place resulting into a super final. In the super final again both climbed the same height but Simran was declared the winner on the basis of less time consumed to reach that height. Jaanvi Kappor of Shiksha Niketan clinched the third position.
In sub junior boys’ category also there was a keen competition amongst the climbers from Oriental Academy, St. Xavier Convent School, Misra Shiksha Niketan High school, Arnia and Shiksha Niketan, Jammu. However, Abhishek Slathia of Oriental Academy, who topped the 40ft high wall, emerged victorious. Vipul Dev Singh and Sharad Partap Singh, both of St. Xavier Convent, had to content with second and third place respectively.
In the boys’ category, climbers of Misra Shiksha Niketan, Arnia performed well in their maiden appearance. Deepak Kumar and Rajesh Kumar of the school bagged silver and bronze medals respectively. The gold medal was, however, won by Shashi Kant of Oriental Academy who topped the wall in a show of strength, speed and technique.
Competitions in the Women’s category could not be held because of inadequate participation.
In all, 253 boys and girls drawn from 13 institutions of the district participated in the two- day competition. The competition, which organised under the overall supervision of Sumit Khajuria, was unique in a way that it was conducted by senior national climbers of the state. While Suraj Singh, Anil Kumar, Akshit Mahajan and Puneet Sharma were the route setters, belayer, Shawetica Khajuria was assisted by Poonam Misra and Neha Dutta and Ritesh Jagotra did the job of judging.
In the prize distribution function, Sports Officer of the State Sports Council, Rajan Sharma was chief guest who presented medals to the winners.
Prominent among others present were Ram Khajuria, secretary, North Zone Sport Climbing Committee, Yogeshwar Sharma, vice president, Mountaineering Association of J&K, Sumit Khajuria, Satish Bhan, Rajinder Sharma, Sonam Sidharth and Directors of
the school, Rahul Sharma, Ramesh Khajuria, Arti Sharma and Savita Khajuria.
