Early Times Report
RAJOURI, Sept 28: Classes in all Government Degree Colleges (GDC) in Rajouri district may suffer in the coming days as all contractual lecturers engaged by higher education department have gone on indefinite strike from today.
Sources said that these Lecturers have not received salary for the last 6 months besides no decision regarding their enhancement of the salary was taken by the state government. These contractual lecturers had already warned the state government to release their salary and also enhance it according to sixth pay commission report.
However getting no response from the department, these lecturers have decided to go o strike and boycott classes from today. With this strike call, more than 200 classes will suffer in the coming days in Rajouri colleges. Higher Education Department had engaged at least 50 lecturers in Rajouri on contractual basis for running the colleges and most of the colleges in the district are totally dependent upon these contractual employees.
When these lecturers have decided to go on strike, these colleges will have to face acute shortage of staff for carrying out class work. Rajouri district is already facing shortage of 50 percent lecturers in Higher Education department and although some classes were being assisted by these lecturers, they have also decided not to give lecturers till their demands are fulfilled.
Strike call was given by Degree Colleges Contractual Lecturers Forum headed by its president Sandeep Sharma who said that they are suffering a lot due to delay in the release of salary for the last 6 months. He said that although they are teaching at par with permanent employees, they are being ignored and their salary is being delayed.
He said that some lecturers have started side business to keep their family pot boiling while few are likely to leave this profession due to non-release of salary. “We are already getting meager enumerations and the same is being denied to us for last 6 months”, he said adding that this is injustice with the contractual staff of the colleges.
Sandeep Sharma said that although all employees are getting benefits under sixth pay commission, they have been given no benefit till date. He said that there are clear cut recommendations in the report to enhance salary of temporary staff but the state government remained undecided over the issue. “We cannot afford in the era of rising prices and our salary must be enhanced”, he said.
Meanwhile, forum has said that they will not resume their work till their demands are not fulfilled. They said that they are just demanding their basic right and not anything else. Although these Lecturers had hoped that Minister for Higher Education Abdul Ghani Malik will announce some package for them during his visit to Rajouri today, they were discouraged when the minister did not make mention of their demands.
