In thirty years, JU could not find a Director for its Department of PE | | | Abodh Sharma
Early Times Report Jammu , Oct 21 After close to three decades and a couple of eyewash interviews, the University of Jammu has not been able to find a suitable candidate to head its directorate of Sports and Department of Physical Education, indicating how vested interests have hijacked the department and conspired to ensure that it could never have a genuine head. Sources in the University divulge that close to three decades after B K Magotra, the first and only full time director of the department of sports and physical education retired, the vested interests took the reins of the department in their hands and manipulated the eligibility and selection criteria for the post of director in such a manner that no candidate could meet it. “The Director in the department of Physical Education is a teaching post of the level of professor and the eligibility criteria is same as that of a professor in any other department, but attribute it to the vested interests who have hijacked the department that despite holding interviews for at least four times, it was ensured that no candidate was selected” said an officer in the University, pleading anonymity. “It is a pity that while good candidates who appeared in the interviews were rejected arguing deficient eligibility points, those with absolutely no affiliation to sports in any capacity have headed the department for years” he added; the department has been meted out step motherly treatment by the successive university administrations and tens of teachers and officers including the incumbent VC and Registrar have been directors of department of physical education. In the backdrop of this sabotage, the department has suffered all these years. Astoundingly, despite the fact that the department is running B PEd and M PEd courses for over a decade, there is no qualified faculty in place that meets the UGC guidelines and there are only four Coaches to oversee conduct of inter college championships and facilitate university’s participation in inter university championships in over 30 disciplines. Resentment and discontent is evident amongst the students undergoing B PEd and M PEd courses who allege poor standard of teaching. “There is complete lack of transparency in the conduct of examination and the standard of teaching is dismal” said a student who passed out after completing his M PEd. “From selection in the B PEd and M PEd course to the time the students pass out, the entire process is manipulated by certain vested interests, who have convinced the administration of their indispensability” he added. “With UGC and the government allocating huge funds to the University for developing its Sports infrastructure, it is imperative that the JU administration contemplated to put in place a full time Director who had the vision and expertise to develop the department” said an official of the department.
