Courtesy its Accounts Deptt., JU faces serious loss of credibility, reputation | | | Abodh Sharma Jammu, Sept 23: Blame it on its sheer indifference and lackadaisical attitude, coupled with lack of effective supervisory mechanism, the Accounts Department of the University of Jammu has earned serious discredit for the University amongst the business community of the city, as payments against the works done by several firms of repute dealing in furniture, furnishing, computers, books, electrical appliances, paper, printing and even daily news papers have been pending for years. These dealers besides causing serious dent to the reputation of the university are vowing never to deal with the University again. A noted news agency of the town recently stopped supply of news papers to the University as its pending bills swelled to over a lac of rupees due to the inability of the Accounts Department to clear the bills periodically. Sources in the university divulge that the supply of news papers to the University was resumed only after the Vice Chancellor himself intervened to get the payment of the agency realized. There are several others who are not lucky like as this noted news paper vendor. "We have been victim of not only the indifference of the Accounts department but also of insult and rudeness that we face whenever we go to track over files," said a city businessman. "For eight months now, I have been shuttling in Accounts, Services and Budget sections of the University for the works I completed at highly competitive rates after completing all formalities," he added. "The university gets the works done by inviting tenders, seeking quotations or through its approved vendors, but many a times it arbitrarily violates the clauses without even informing the dealers," said another businessman. "If you press them for your legitimate dues, they shall even threaten to blacklist you," he added. While many emphasised the need to revisit the laid norms and assess the performances of the officers and officials of the Accounts Department, others point out at the recent administrative anomaly that has further hampered the performance of the Accounts department. "Special Secretary to the VC Neeraj Sharma has recently been appointed as OSD finance, but all financial powers lie with the Registrar, thus unnecessarily delaying the files. Even though Neeraj Sharma is in the pay grade of the Registrar, his appointment is under scrutiny of the Chief Secretary headed probe committee," informed an officer of the university pleading anonymity.
