| No drill conducted, no trained person to fight flames | | | Avinash Azad
Jammu, Mar 24: The fire fighting infrastructure in Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu, was created in 2012, but fire-drill have not been conducted so far. Moreover, after spending more than Rs 25 lacs for the infrastructure, the authorities in the hospital has failed to appoint even a single trained person to perform his duties in emergency. Describing the lackadaisical loom of sitting Principal, GMC&H Dr Shashi Gupta, sources in hospital told Early Times that the principal has never fire drill in the hospital till date. "Since the principal took over the charge, she never inspected the fire fighting system", sources said, adding that it has added another major blemish on its functioning in the shape of inadequate fire fighting measures in the hospital-- of one of the 'premier' heath institution of the state which has put the life of patients, their attendants and hospital staff at grave risk. They further said that the fire fighting system in GMC had remained defunct for long time, "Which was replaced 2012 end, but the administration has not bothered to conduct trial", the official added. Though, in another major lapse of the hospital administration is that it has failed to ensure the provision of even a single bucket filled with sand in the premises of the ward to fight fire. It is quite baffling that the hospital administration has forgotten that the sand is one of the oldest, cheapest and effective modes of fire fighting which can easily douse even the raging flame. "The hospital is always prone to a fire incident since its ceiling has been covered with ply board which is an open invitation for the fire to engulf the entire structure as and when some mishap happened. Even a lay man knows that a spark generated by a short circuit can turn this emergency ward into ashes", sources maintained, adding that however, it seems that the hospital administration is in deep slumber and waiting for a catastrophe to strike the largest health institution of Jammu province. |
