Sopore, Baramulla street lights go dysfunctional | | | Early Times Report
BARAMULLA, Feb 4: Despite the fact that the state government has spent a huge sum of money to illuminate the dark roads here in Sopore and Baramulla towns but these street lights have gone dysfunctional within six months, locals accused the PDD and Muncipal authorities for their failure . According to sources these street lights were installed long back in Sopore town right from Chanakan Bridge to Model town, including the Main Bazaar, Dak Bungalow and the Tehsil Road , but most of them are not functional. A local resident of Model town Sopore told Early Times that, "government is spending crores of rupees on these street lights but it is unfortunate that the streets remains dark during night hours and that too when there is an emergency. "Street lights on most of the roads in Sopore town remains defunct and these iron poles have become a sign of enemy as they poses a threat in darkness, said local inhabitant. Local said that, "The Municipal Council and Power Development Department spends money in lakhs on the maintenance of these street lights every year. A group of local traders of the town said that they have made hundreds of complaint against erring concerned officials but all in vain, let the district administration tighten the noose of concerned departments for their failure. As you know the situation doesn't allow you here to move out during late hour in the nights without light, we fail to understand why money was spent," locals alleged. Sheikh Fayaz of old Town Baramulla said that I am of the opinion that government is paying these departments a hefty amount, and it should have been utilized for installation of these street lights as you take an example of cement bridge which has never illuminated throughout the year otherwise government is paying them for what. If these street lights across the district are made functional, definitely the main towns will remain abuzz with the business activity during the late hours, but only few street light are working here and perhaps that too on rotational basis, Sheikh said It is pertinent to mention here that on Jan 10 DDC Baramulla had directed the municipality and Power Development Department (PDD) to ensure installation of the street lights and wherever installed, they should be made functional especially at places of public importance and gathering like hospitals and other public institutions. The irony is the concerned official gave a deaf hearing to the directions which had been given by the District Magistrate in past, sometimes these street lights illuminate your towns during day times instead of night hours. |
