Jammu, Feb 4: Department Of Lifelong Learning (Formerly, Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension), University of Jammu today organized a special extension lecture by eminent journalist Rahul Jalali on the theme "Mass media and its role in India's developmental journey" in the DLL seminar Hall. In his lecture, Jalali who has over 35 years rich experience in journalism having worked with various newspapers, discussed in detail the role of mass media in India's developmental journey right from the post-Independence era. He said the history of mass media and its role in India's development could be divided into three parts, from 1947 to mid-70's, from mid-70's to 1990s and 1990s up to present times. Jalali, a guest faculty at Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), said media especially newspapers in India played a very significant role in the shaping up of an independent India. In this regard, he gave a reference of the land reforms in Jammu and Kashmir which were highlighted in the national newspapers and were used as a point of reference by other Indian states. "In the pre-independence era, the newspapers were broadly divided into two categories - the pro-British media and the pro-nationalist media. However, after independence, the newspapers played an important role in planning and developmental aspects of the country," said Jalali. Earlier, Prof Poonam Dhawan, Head of Department/Director DLL welcomed Jalali who has remained president of Press Club of India, New Delhi twice. Dr Kavita Suri, Associate Professor coordinated the programme while DLL faculty members Dr Priyanka Sharma, Dr Pallavi Sachdeva, Dr Bharti Prabhakar, Dr Sandeep Singh, Dr Vivek Sharma were also present on the occasion. Dr Savita Nayyar from the Department of Law, Sidharth Dogra, Editor and Akanksha, reporter of Jammu Links were also present. |
