SC dismisses SLP against HC order on coaching centres | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 20 : The Supreme Court of India has dismissed a Special Leave Petition against the orders by Jammu and Kashmir High Court, directing closure of all unregistered coaching and tuition centres in the state. "Taken on board, Dismissed," said a Division Bench of the Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justice A.K. Sikri after hearing SLP filed by Coaching Centres Association through its chairman. However, the division bench granted another six weeks' time from today to the coaching centres to comply with the orders. On February 10, the J&K High Court had directed the Divisional Commissioner Jammu to comply with the order dated December 30 2014 and submit detailed report to the Court before the next date."A similar committee for Jammu Division shall stand constituted as has been constituted in terms of order datedDecember 30 and all the directions issued shall be complied with by the committee," the high court had said.On December 30 last year, the Court had ordered constitution of a three-member committee headed by Divisional Commissioner with Director School Education and Inspector General of Police, as its members. The committee was asked to immediately close down all unregistered tuition and coaching centres wherever functioning in the Kashmir division. It had also directed the committee to forthwith ensure keeping of police personnel on duty in the areas where the tuition and coaching centres are located and functioning. The high court had also warned the three-member committee headed by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, observing that in case its order of closing down the coaching centres was not implemented with, then on next date contempt proceedings will be initiated against the members of panel. "In order to secure the interests of children who are studying in the unregistered coaching centres/tuition centres, we order that owners/authorized persons of these coaching centres/tuition centres shall not operate their bank accounts which stand in their names," the court had said. The court had also directed constitution of a two-member committee comprising two former District and Sessions Judges to verify the statement made to the undertaking filed by the coaching centres in compliance to its orders. |
