After 4 Deaths SKIMS admits H1N1 attack in Oct, 2014 | Health Department concealed information: DAK | | Javaid Naikoo
Srinagar, Feb 20 : After lot of hue and cry over the spread of swine flu in Kashmir which so far has claimed four lives, the Health officials said that H1N1virus has struck Kashmir in October 2014 and till date 96 patients have been tested positive for Swine flu Virus. According to reports, around 250 patients were seen today at newly opened Pulmonary Medicine outpatient Department (OPD) in SKIMS. However, only 40 samples were collected for testing. Admitting failures after lot of hue and cry, the society over negligence of health officials in tackling swine fluthreat, SKIMS authorities today said that from 'October last year till date total 96 patients have been confirmed positive for H1N1 virus. At a time when according to sources Doctors and paramedical staff looking after Swine Flu Patients in wards registered their protest to provide them required uniform which includes a special gown, spectacles and masks, SKIMS in a statement today claimed that all required facilities are in place and 4000 N95 masks have been received and 6000 Tamiflu tablets are expected to be received soon. Sources said that one more patient tested positive for swine flu virus two days ago is on ventilator and eleven patients are admitted in isolation ward meant for Swine flu patients only and more deaths in coming days cannot be ruled out. Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) which continuously criticizes the Health department for failures to tackle spread of swine flu today started a separate helpline to tackle swine flu mayhem in Kashmir. In a statement DAK said that in view of swine flu outbreak in Kashmir and with no let up in the impact of virus, they have decided to set up round the clock helpline numbers for public awareness. DAK said that people can call and get information on following phone numbers: 09697988866, 09419409866, 09086889191, 09906832097, 09796337171, 09596251400 and 09469154840 and added that communicators on these helpline numbers are expert doctors who will address public concerns on swine flu mayhem. President DAK, Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan said that helpline numbers will address public anxiety and panic created by distrust of health officials who concealed information and failed to protect public health. He said that vaccination against H1N1 virus has to be prioritized for high risk persons like pregnant women, persons who live with or care for children younger than 06 months, diabetics, chronic lung or kidney disease, asthmatics, children below 5 years, elderly and health care workers. H1N1 expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan said that effective communication to public in an outbreak is vital to prevent the spread of disease and is an intervention in its own right and public during an outbreak is entitled to credible and consistent information to build trust which is critical for hastening containment of outbreak and added that once the demand for vaccine for these target groups is met then everybody should begin vaccinating, children younger than 10 years should receive 2 doses of H1N1 vaccine separated by 4 weeks and Infants younger than 6 months are too young to get any influenza vaccine. |
