Budgam residents up in arms against dilapidated condition of roads | | | Shakeel A Khan
Early Times Report
BUDGAM, Feb 25: With no drainage system in place, the residents of this Central Kashmir district are suffering immensely as the rain water has inundated the roads and lanes. With some streams overflowing, the people have been confined to their homes. It is usual, as the people of the area say that the traffic movement gets affected after the rainfall as there is no drainage system in the area. The roads come under the water on account of the marginal rainfall hence hindering the movement of people. "The Budgam-Narbal road which is important for road connectivity comes under water at many places and even the marginal rainfall becomes a cause of concern for the people. It makes the situation very difficult for the commoners," said Abdul Wahid from Watalpora. Wahid said that activities of the people come to the grinding halt in the area when it rains for some hours. The movement of the vehicles is already very difficult on these roads and the accumulation of water makes the movement impossible. Magam-Budgam road, which is another vital road in the district, also gets affected due to no drainage system. Hardly any vehicle, private or commercial, can be seen moving and if there is any movement, that could be out of compulsion. "The condition of roads depends on effective drainage system which unfortunately isn't there anywhere along the route from Magam to Budgam main. As a result of this, the road comes under water, making the movement of the people very difficult," said Farooq Ahmad from Magam. It is the fact, as according to Farooq, district Budgam has got the history of bad roads, which were never paid any attention by the successive governments. But the lack of drainage system has further deteriorated the condition of the roads. The people who had to come out of their houses at Daharmunah could be seen removing their shoes and socks near 2RR camp to walk the distance of 200 hundred meters in water, that too in the shivering cold. "It is an age old problem and has never been paid attention by the concerned legislator. Despite bringing it to his notice many a times, the problem remains the same and every time under such circumstances we have to take our shoes and socks off to walk bear footed in the water, that too in the sub-zero temperature," said Abdul Rashid from Daharmunah. Rashid went on saying that he wishes the MLA to visit the area and see himself what has he achieved for the people during the last 12 years. Good governance for 12 years is enough to transform the whole country, Rashid added. |
