Nepal quake sends shock signals across JK | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 25: A high magnitude earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale that shook Nepal and several other states of India on Saturday has sent a shock wave across Jammu Kashmir which falls in a highly seismic zone. Soon after the aftershocks of the quake were felt across parts of Jammu and Kashmir residents went in to shock as they have been regularly experiencing moderate earthquakes on regular basis. Last time major quake hit the state in May 2013 in Doda region and caused widespread loss and destruction. Since then several moderate intensity earthquakes hit the state spreading panic among local residents. Ironically, the state government machinery has failed to get its act together and has also failed to adequately equip itself to effectively manage aftermath of earthquakes in the region. The state government machinery has restricted its activities to holding review meetings and chalking out strategies on a piece of paper than recording its presence on the ground zero. Till date the state disaster response force has not been fully equipped with basic infrastructure to launch rescue and relief operations without wasting time. The absence of any nodal agency has allowed rampant construction activity to take place without adhering to building bylaws and keeping in mind the mapping of seismic zones, prone to earthquakes. |
