Separate settlements for KPs in Valley | Arguments against | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 25: The move of the union government to set up separate settlements for internally displaced Kashmiri Pandits in the valley has not only upset "mainstream" Kashmiri parties and separatists of all hues, but has also disturbed the foreign-based Pakistani agents of Kashmir origin. They, like the Kashmiri leadership which opposes separate colonies for the KPs in the Valley, also use spurious arguments against the move, which, interestingly, many KP organizations, including the Panun Kashmir, also oppose for national reasons. What does the America-based Pakistani agent of Kashmir origin Ghulam Nabi Fai say about the issue? They say the move, if allowed to fructify, would destroy Kashmiriat. "The Valley of Kashmir has remained the symbol of communal harmony for centuries. It has a sustained tradition of tolerance and amity between the members of various religious groups. Kashmiriat does not generate extremism or fundamentalism…It seems a sinister design to bring an end to this century-old bond of the people of Kashmir, irrespective of their cultural backgrounds," he shamelessly says conveniently ignoring the fact that Kashmir became virtually one-community region more than 25 years ago, as also the fact that the KPs quit their homes and hearths because the situation in the Valley was highly frightening. It was the brutal radicalization that forced the KPs to leave their original homeland and the process of radicalization has not subsided. Rather, the situation has worsened in the Valley with many educated youth speaking the language of Lashkar chief Hafiz Saeed. "Kashmiri Pandits have their religious monuments and symbols situated in the midst of the areas of majority community. If they want their separate homeland outside majority community areas, how are they going to have access to these monuments and how are they going to protect them?", he also asks. To make his case he refers to what Srinagar-based Sanjay Tickoo, self-styled chairman of one-man Kashmiri Pandit Sangharsh Samiti (KPSS), and Jagmohan Singh Raina, chairman of the marginal Kashmir-based All-party Sikh Coordination Committee, have said under duress or for some other questionable reasons. "I totally agree with Mr. Sanjay Tickoo, who said that 'the separate zones will set a dangerous precedent" and that "wherever there is minority (community) it should live with the majority," he says, adds that "Mr. Tickoo truly represents the sentiments of all Kashmiris when he emphasized that 'separate settlements' will go against the basic ethos of Kashmir and Sufi tradition". He also admires Raina and quotes what he said a few days ago. "Jagmohan Singh Raina had said that "Kashmir is about Kashmiriyat which means brotherhood" and "Sikhs settled in city during the turmoil but never went away but now KPs should also come and live together like us". To make his point, he further says that it is common understanding that these separate homelands are to be designed to change the demography of Kashmir; that the design is to invite people from other parts of India and in particular belonging to RSS; that no one will know who resides there; that the identity of residents cannot be verified by anyone except the government which has the design and the capability of changing the demographics in any manner they choose; that the BJP administration is doing it because they want to show the symbol of India in every nook and corner of the Valley; that the scheme is also to weaken the Kashmiri political resistance movement; and that the bestsolution of this dilemma is that the Pandit brethren should return to the Valley and the majority community must open their hearts and minds in order to give them moral support and sense of security. His arguments are bogus and communally motivated. It is for the displaced KPS to take a final call as Kashmir belongs to them. In fact, it is time for the authorities to concede their homeland demand. |
