Security grid being upgraded to prevent disruptions in ensuing Amarnath Yatra | | | Early Times Reprot
JAMMU, May 5: Following separatists support for curtailment of Amarnath yatra period the state Government has decided not to buckle under the pressure from Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who heads the hardliners among the separatists, and curtail the yatra period. Official sources said that there would be no change in the duration of the yatra which is to begin from July 2 and end onAugust 29. Government circles said that conceding the demand of separatists for curtailing yatra period would give a wrong impression about the functioning of the Government. These circles said that not only the BJP but the PDP leadership is also opposed to curtailing the yatra period. Sources said that the Government has sought between 60 and 70 additional companies of paramilitary forces from the union Home Ministry to prevent separatists and other vested interests from disrupting the annual yatra. According to these sources, the additional companies of paramilitary forces would start arriving into the state from middle of next month. Sources said that apart from the deployment of police and paramilitary forces on the entire route from Kathua to the holy cave several companies of troops were to be engaged in sanitizing the area around the holy cave. In addition to this various security pickets of paramilitary forces and the Army were to be established on the highway between Jammu and Anantnag. Also the route between Baltal and the holy cave will have separate deployment of police and paramilitary forces. Government circles said that the main part of the security drill was to lay stress on the Road Opening Programme (ROP) from Nagrota to Pahalgam. The same ROP would be strictly followed on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Baltal-cave route so that militants failed to plant some explosive devices. Reports said that paramilitary forces personnel would be assigned the ROP exercise. According to these reports, the caravan of pilgrims would leave Jammu, the base camp, under tight security. Two to four vehicles carrying security forces would escort buses and private vehicles carrying pilgrims. |
