SMHS burnward reflects rot in Kashmiri society | Tale of 3 `burnt' women | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 5: The fairsex has not been getting a fair deal in the onetime abode of saints. While authorities boast of empowering women, the reports from he burnward of SMHS hospital explodes these claims. A doctor who mans the burnward told Early Times that three victims of domestic violence are admitted in the burnward every month. Presaently three women, who attempted immolation are undergoing treatment in the ward. One haild from Verinag in Anantnag district and the otrher from Srinagar's old town. Shazia (name changed) got married last year and her mother-in-law forced her to deposit all the ornaments with her. "The relation was no cordial and her husband left her with her parents last month after she demanded custody of her ornaments. Last week she camew to know that her husband intended to divorce her. She attempted immolation and was rushed to SMHS hospital incritical condition," said her aunt who has been attending her eversince she was admitted. Anothere victims, Rafiqa (name changed) hails from Shopian. Her husband runs a medical shop and had been harassing her from the day first. She attempted suicide but was saved and asdmitted in the burn A Bengali woman bought by a man from Khankah-e-Moula in down town Srinagar is also in trhe ward for her burns. She told Early Times that her husband set her ablaza allegedly over a heated argument. However, she is not in favour of registering a police case. "He beats me but please do not take any action against him," she said in a feeble voice. Dr Shahid Iqbal who is a professor in plastic surgery department at SMHS hospital said two to three burn cases are brought to the ward every month. According to him, this phenomenon was not in vogue inm yesteryears. Social activist Qurat-ul-Ain Masoodi, sees a role for the government, civil society and the law enforcing aegncies incurbing the menace. Former chairperson State Women Commission Shameema Firdous said unemployment was the main reason behind this unfortunate trend. "I have seen men who are not ready to spend a penny on their wives. Such cases end on divorce," she said. |
