Congress leaders attacked with stones by agitating youth in city centre | Traders arrested, Er Rashid's protest rally foiled | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 5: Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President, Ghulam Ahmad Mir and some of the Congress leaders had a miraculous escape after they came under heavy stone pelting from angry youth in the Lal Chowk area here this morning. As part of their programme the Congress leaders and workers carried out a procession from the party headquarters and started moving the civil secretariat. The Congress leaders and workers had announced that they would carry out protests outside the civil secretariat against the alleged government failure on multiple fronts. As the Congress leaders and workers led by Mir reached near the Budshah Chowk the police personnel posted there asked them to stop and not to move ahead. The Congress leaders and workers tried their best to move ahead to reach civil secretariat so that their programme is successful and they are able to register their protest. As the argument between the Congress leaders as well as workers and the cops was going on a group of youth appeared some distance away. The youth started pelting stones on the Congress leaders and workers and also the police personnel. The stone pelting gained momentum and in no time there was heavy stone pelting in the area. The agitated youth also took exception to the 'Ragda' type protest carried out by the Congress workers. Interestingly, some of the Congress workers lost the plot and raised anti-India slogans while huddling around during the protest. The Congress workers as well as the leaders came under severe stone pelting and were virtually chased away by the protesters. The situation turned volatile in the Budshah Chowk area and the groups of youth got engaged in ding dong battle with police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel for hours together. Two cops, two videographers and some agitating youth suffered minor injuries during the clashes. Police lobbed smoke shells on the protesters and the situation was very tense in the areas falling adjacent to the Budshah Chowk. Police also foiled the protest march of Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) towards the civil secretariat. As the traders under KTMF started their procession towards the civil secretariat the cops present in strength stopped tem and did not allow them to move ahead. The traders offered stiff resistance and still tried to carry forward their procession. Following this the police arrested some of the traders only to be released later in the day. The protest march of Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) President Engineer Abdul Rashid was also foiled after he was taken into arrest by the police near the headquarters of Fire and Emergency Services. Rashid was protesting against the government's proposal of creation of separate colonies for the Kashmiri Pandits who want to come back to Kashmir valley. |
