BARAMULLA, May 15: Despite tall claims of the government t to provide facilities to the students and employees of education department, the students and teachers of Government Primary School Dardapora are suffering from last ten years and are forced to work in rented shops instead of its own government building here in Baramulla district of North Kashmir.
Sources told Early Times that, "Government Primary School was established at Daradpora area of Baramulla town of education Zone Singhpora in 2005, under Serva Shiksha Abhiyan scheme (SSA).
The Primary school is having a roll of more than thirty five students and two Rehbare Taleem Teachers (ReTs) were appointed there in October 2005. However the school is lacking of all basic infrastructure like government building, toilet, playground and much more due to which students couldn't concentrate on their studies, said sources.
Sources said Government Primary School under centrally sponsored scheme SSA have not been upgraded from last ten years, there is a chronic lack of educational facilities and financial resources from the government of India.
Early times have learnt from a parent that school runs from two dilapidated, rented shops that offer a seriously poor learning environment. Around 35 students attend classes crammed into two separate shops with poor ventilation and lighting, inadequate bathrooms, and almost non-existent play areas. This results in grossly inadequate learning environment for the children.
Perhaps it was a difficult task for government to arrange a piece of land, while adding parent said I am not so qualified like the ministers or other officials but I can understand the value of education, that is why I donated ten marlas of land to government so that they can construct a primary school there in Dardpora.
"Two tin shops are rented for which we are paying Rupees 400 pm there is little room to make any adjustments or to expand", Farooq Ahmad, head teacher explained to Early Times.
Land of ten marlas for the Government Primary School has been donated by a villager, Abdul Refman Mir, parent of Abu Hajji Mir free of cost, said a teacher.
However the work was started on a new building but only the plinth was constructed in December 2014 and later the work was stopped due to non availability of funds, said head teacher.
Teacher added that attending class in an unsuitable rented building poses a serious challenge to many of the children trying to get an education in Kashmir, and as SSA moves ahead with reforms to its education programme throughout the country, the rented schools in Baramulla district look set to fall even further behind.
"The school yard is too small to allow for physical education or extra-curricular activities, and the morning registration is difficult to organize properly, even though we also have no emergency exit.
The irony is there are plenty of funds available with the government, but hardly infrastructure is available in all schools, to encourage group work and other active learning is in dilapidated conditions where overcrowded classrooms is nearly impossible.
Operating costs in the rented schools are also considerably higher than in proper SSA schools, which is itself a callous attitude of government towards the development.
