Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 15: The State Government has shelved the much talked about Tawi lake Project on which over Rs 60 crore were spent so far. The project was conceived over a decade back by then Congress-PDP Government led by Ghulam Nabi Azad as a multipurpose project.
However the announcement regarding its shelving by State Government today has come as a rude shock to people. The half of project is complete and the people were expecting that the work will be expedited soon to complete the project which was abandoned for paucity of funds over one year back.
The people were demanding immediate starting of the project and they were expecting that the Tawi Lake will be completed within a year or two to add to the scenic beauty of city of temples. The announcement regarding expediting the work on Tawi lake and Birage was made number of times by former Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din but the project remained a distant dream till date.
The shelving of project has raised many questions that if it was not to be constructed at all why over Rs 60 crore the were spent of it which is the hard earned money of the people. This money had been diverted to any other developmental project in the region of the State.
The Government owes an explanation to the people in this regard, says Vikas Kumar a social activist of Jammu. He said the government can't absolve itself of the responsibility that the project was taken up in hand by previous government without taking the ground realities and its feasibility into consideration, he added.
The present Government must know that the governments work in continuity and it has to continue the legacies left by previous government by completing all the pending projects in the State, he added.
Same has been the view of Ramesh Khajuria another social activist. He said the Tawi Lake could help in reservation of water during the peak Summer when the level depletes in rivers and can be used for irrigation and drinking water purposes. By shelving the project Government lacks vision and foresight, he added.
He said the people and the parties which were earlier talking to be the champions of cause of Jammu should have an introspection what is happening under their nose and how the interests of the people of Jammu are being harmed. Earlier it was AIIMS issue and now the prestigious Tawi lake project is being shelved which will not be allowed at any cost, he added.
