JK Kissan Tehreek stages hunger strike, seeks compensation for damaged crops | | | Early Times Report
Kathua, May15: The Jammu & Kashmir Kissan Tehreek, a farmers' organization affiliated with All India Kissan Sabha Delhi today staged huge protest demonstration here at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park including 24 hours long hunger strike to impress their demands of compensation for damaged crops due to hailstorms/ incessant rainfalls in previous weeks. Rahul Gandhi Vice-president INC raised farmers' issue in Parliament and said that farmers sell potatoes of Rs 2 kg but chips are sold at Rs 10 per 50 gm. He said that the compensation must be given to farmers at earliest. The protest was led by Banarsi Dass where several farmers were on hunger strike while shouting slogans against Revenue department. While addressing protesters, Banarsi Dass said 2 months have passed where farmers lost their crops but nobody took initiative to compensate poor farmers whose livelihood completely depend upon agriculture produces. Kissan Tehreek held protest rally from Ram Lila Maidan to DDC office, and submitted memorandums to Chief Minister and Prime Minister of India through proper channel. Dass informed that State cabinet recommended Crops Insurance Bill but government's impedimental to implement the bill for the benefits of farmers whose crops were frequently damaged in consecutive years. He suggested pulling out loopholes in revenue department to maintain the revenue record properly. Sewa Ram, member, Kissan Tehreek had similar view and added that delegation called on DDC Kathua in previous days who ordered revenue officers to conduct survey for estimate of damaged crops. He alleged on Patwaris and said despite strict direction of DDC Kathua, Patwaris have still not reached at damaged spots. |
