Leopard scare: Wild Life officials catch prowling beast, locals heave sigh of relief

Rajouri, Aug 4: Students of Govt High School Androla and people residing in its close vicinity under the jurisdiction of Police Post Chingus of Rajouri district had heaved a sigh of relief when Wild Life team alongwith police team caught a prowling leopard here today.
Soon after noticing a fully grown leopard locals informed the police at Police Post Chingus from where a team was rushed to the village.
"Meanwhile a team of wild life officials from Rajouri also was rushed to the village along with necessary equipments and tranquilizer gun, police sources said.
"After a three hour long chase the leopard was caught by the wild life team and was brought to the office of Warden Wild Life, police sources said.
Here it needs to mention that for the last few days people have been complaining about the presence of the Leopard in the area but every time it was giving slip to them. "Today it was spotted near the school and after the people chased him it took a shelter in a natural cave" said a villager.
Reports from area said that during the process to capture the leopard no villager/policeman or wild life employee was injured.
Confirming the catch, Mushtaq Ahmed, Warden Wild Life Rajouri said that his team has captured the leopard and will be kept under department's custody for few days to provide due treatment and to know his behavior.
"During these days it will also be observed whether the captured Leopard has inadvertently had entered the human inhabitation or it may be kept in the category of man eater" said Wild Life Warden.
He added that the department has been regularly conducting awareness camps for the people where the presence of leopards has been noticed. He also added that the department has suggested a relief/ex-gratia of Rs 3 lakh compensation to the kin of the deceased in case of man wild conflict and in case of major injuries including loss of limbs the compensation depends upon the report of the Medical Board.
