| 'Hashiya': Hindi Translation of Dogri Novel 'Hashiye Par'- A Preview | | | Shailendra Singh, Dr. Chanchal Bhasin | 2/23/2018 9:18:23 PM |
| Dogri language and literature is making its position strong in literary circles with execution of various genres like short stories, poetry, fiction and the like. The literature and books are now available in Dogri with the books of other languages being practiced in this region of the country as well making a pave on the world map through various organizations, establishments and E- content etc. the matter and the expressions contain different aspects of relevance of contemporary issues of the prevailing situations at social, political, economical and religious levels.
In addition to publication of articles, poems, short stories etc. in various periodicals etc. the books of Dogri languages are making their presence felt in the literary world around. Similarly the translation work of Dogri literature and books have made a significant existence in other languages like English, Hindi, Punjabi and so on. Similarly again the literary work of other languages has also taken place in the recent years. Collectively these are the better signs of prospering of a local language like Dogri.
Recently a Dogri fiction work of border belt area fiction writer Shailendra Singh has been translated into Hindi by Dr. Chanchal Bhasin, a noted Dogri and Hindi poet, writer, translator, critic and academician hailing from Jammu. She, after reading the original Dogri novel titled 'Hashiye Par' written by Shailendra Singh, was so impressed that she asked Shailenra Singh to permit her to translate it in Hindi. The request was accepted by the author of the novel.
The novel of 161 pages in Dogri, written in 2010 has already been translated by Suman Kumar Sharma and published with the title 'Hashiye Par: For A Tree To Grow', by Oxford University Press, New Delhi during 2014. The novel was then translated in Hindi by Dr. Chanchal Bhasin with the title 'Hashiye' and published by Vani Prakashan, New Delhi during 2017. The novel has brought the writer the honours like Padamshree Ram Nath Shastri Memorial Award by Dogri Sanstha, Jammu and Sahitya Akademi Award during 2014.
The novel is based on realities of life in our surroundings and associated mainly the mal- practices and social as well class conflicts. The theme reflects on the prevailing situation in our society. Though the novel is the debut fiction work of the writer but reflection of his maturity in perceiving the idea and expressing it in his style can be seen in his work. The theme of the play moves around the injustice being faced by the families living in hand to mouth conditions. These people live in the conditions where they have to work hard to get two ends meal for the family, even sometimes are deprived of that also because they sometimes don't get their genuine and due payments against their labour.
Madan, a fisherman, is the main character of the novel who is father of two sons and two daughters. He fishes out from the local river but that sometimes is not sufficient to run his family's expenses. So, he has to work as a labour many times. He comes to know about government's scheme namely 'National Employment Guarantee Scheme' that ensures a hundred days' work during a year to the needy persons of the rural areas. Madan is filled with happiness and dreams of getting employment and subsequently pension after finishing his government job but this doesn't last long. He works with the contractor Mukhtiyar Singh who pays him less than the promised wages, on one plea or the other. The payments are to be made through bank cheque for which he has to open account in the bank by paying some amount. This compels him to leave that job.
Now Madan is worried about the future of his children who are quite intelligent and wise to understand the miseries being faced by the family and good at studies. His elder son Kamal top ranks the class and clears his entrance tests for engineering course. Madan is worried about his expenses during Kamal's further studies and is in a conflict of happiness and worry. For help, he approaches his cousin who had earlier also helped him out in the time of need. While studying at Srinagar, Kamal stands first with good marks during his first semester. For this, he is awarded with scholarship for his entire course. This sparks a ray of hope in the family.
The class conflict in the society has been described beautifully in the novel through its content and expression. The novel deals with the issue of exploitation by landlord and 'haves' against the exploited and 'have- not' ones. The mal- practices being done by the land lords, politicians, leaders etc. through criminal activities, cruelty and injustice due to the un- equality in the system, are exposed in the plot of the novel. Zaildar Daya Ram, the richest person of the area is one of such characters in the novel. He uses the labourers and their off springs in his farms and house. So the coming generations are deprived of the light of education and in turn, are exploited due to their ignorance caused by illiteracy. If someone comes to them with a proposal of service for his son, he is cursed and ill treated.
Similarly contractor Mukhtiyar and his mate Rachhpal exploit the illiterate people with wrong information about the governmental policies and their rights under BPL and other schemes. The exploitation of the villagers is also reflected in the case when the deserving candidates do not appear where they are supposed to get pacca houses. It happens only with the help of character like Mukhtiyar against those needy persons who have voted against their will during the last election. Similarly, the shrewd politicians who chant only false promises and actually do not fulfill these, have also been exposed in the novel.
The novel also refers to the exploited class of labourers, housekeepers, commoners and so on and poverty, illiteracy and their belief in their destiny to be responsible for their miseries, to be the cause of their sufferings.
Sardari Lal, Madan's father had been deprived of getting land on his name as promised by the government to provide the labourers who worked on those lands through a scheme announced during 1971 by state government. Sardari Lal was over busy in performing his sincere duties on the farms of the minister at that time and he was kept in dark about his rights.
A multifaceted reflection of conflicts, ideas and dreams can be clearly seen in the novel that convinces the reader with its moving ahead from the very starting till the end in the original theme. Like the established writer, Shailendra Singh has justified his treatment with the contemporary issues in their true note and tune. He, at times, has suggested solutions to the problems projected through the plot, situations and variety of characters. His optimism also appears to support the people suffering from the miseries. The light of hope is shown through the education of Kamal that sparks ray of hope for the poor and illiterate family of Madan. He suggests here his optimism and solution to the problems that education will take them from darkness to light.
The same spirit of the plot has been depicted in the translated edition of the novel by Dr. Chanchal Bhasin who herself is a Hindi and Dogri writer. She has conveyed the spirit of the theme in simple and realistic approach in apprehending the gist of the theme of the novel while translating it from Dogri to Hindi. She has made appreciable effort to maintain the usage of idioms and phrases with genuine alternatives or substitutes. The nature and character of conversations have been given priority to represent the characters as has been maintained in the original work. The underlined realities of the theme keep on shining throughout the translated version with the same keenness and depth of thought. The true to life situations and happenings around us are alive in the translated Hindi novel 'Hashiye' as is in the novel 'Hashiye Par' in Dogri. |
