Militants carry out separate attacks at Charar-I-Sharief, Soura; two cops killed

SRINAGAR, Feb 25: Militants today carried out separate attacks on police in Central Kashmir's districts of Srinagar and Budgam leading to the death of two policemen posted in these two districts.
Reports said that two militants appeared near the entrance of shrine of revered saint Sheikh ul Alam Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani at Charar-I-Sharief in Budgam and fired at the cop posted at the gate of shrine. The firing incident led to grievous injuries to the policeman identified as Kultar Singh.
The injured cop was shifted to the hospital for treatment by the locals and other cops but he succumbed to his injuries. The militants after carrying out the deadly attack managed to escape from the scene. Although, the area was cordoned off by police and security forces after the militant attack, but no one was arrested.
Reports said that the militants after carrying out the attack managed to decamp with the self loading rifle (SLR) of the cop. The slain cop was a resident of Samba in Jammu division. He is survived by aged parents, wife and two sons.
In the evening, militants attacked the police party guarding the residence of Fazal-ul-Haq Qureshi, leader of Mirwaiz faction of Hurriyat Conference at Bilal Colony-Soura in the summer capital of the state. The militant attack led to serious injuries to a policeman identified as Farooq Ahmad Yatoo. The cop was shifted to SKIMS-Soura where he succumbed to his injuries.
Reports said that the militants managed to run away from the site along with the service rifle of the cop. Farooq was a resident of Chadoora in Budgam district. Qureshi was attacked by militants in December 2009. The area has been cordoned off by police and security forces and searches were going on when last reports came in.
A police spokesman said that two police personnel were killed in attacks by militants in separate incidents in Kashmir valley.
Police personnel identified as Selection Grade Constable Kultar Singh who was guarding a religious shrine in Charar-I-Sharief area of Budgam was attacked by militants and fled away with his service rifle (SLR). Later on, the said personnel succumbed to his injuries at 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar.
"In one more militant attack, militants attacked the police constable Farooq Ahmad Yatoo who was guarding a separatist leader Fazal Haq Qureshi at his residence in Bilal Colony Soura. Militants also decamped with his service rifle. The said police personnel succumbed to his injuries at SKIMS Soura. Cases in both the incidents have been registered and investigation set in motion," said the police spokesman.
A wreath laying ceremony was held at District Police Lines Srinagar to pay homage to Kultar Singh. Special Director General of Police V. K. Singh led police officers and jawans in laying floral wreaths on the mortal remains of the 'martyr'.
Among others who presented wreaths and flowers included IGP Kashmir Swayam Prakash Pani, DIG CKR Ghulam Hassan Bhat, DIG SKR Amit Kumar, DIG BSF S. S. Guleria, SSP Srinagar Imtiaz Ismail Parray, SSP Budgam Tejinder Singh and ADC Srinagar Vikas Kundal.
