Poonch, Feb 25: SKUAST-J scientists surveyed the different areas of Poonch district under the Net Work Project on "Characterization of Poonchi Chicken" funded by ICAR-NBAGR and being implemented by SKUAST-Jammu. The project is started under the patronage of Dr. J.P. Sharma, Director Research, SKUAST-Jammu. Team of scientists comprised of Dr. Dhirendra Kumar, Principal Investigator, Dr. D. Chakraborty, Co-Principal Investigator and Dr. Simran Singh, Ph. D. Scholar of Division of Animal Genetics & Breeding, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, RS Pura, SKUAST Jammu. The team visited and interacted with the farmers rearing desi chicken at Mandi, Poonch and Surankot areas of Poonch district. The mission of the network project is to survey, documentation and characterization the desi poultry of Poonch region. Desi chicken of this region is highly cold resistant. There is need to identify the desi chicken of this region and to be promoted among the farmers to maintain the identity of particular population of poultry. The desi chicken is mainly reared as backyard system and providing the livelihood security to the farmers rearing this population. The farmers were also advised by the scientists about different disease out-break and management of the population for better productivity. |
