Will Kashmir issue be resolved if more routes are reopened?
3/19/2018 8:50:25 PM
Will the Kashmir issue be resolved if the traditional silk route is reopened? Chance for this are remote because the issue was not settled even when the Uri-Muzaffarabad route or Poonch-Rawlakot routes were reopened for trade and people to people contact sometimes in 2003-2005. How does Mehbooba Mufti feel certain that the Kashmir issue could be resolved once the traditional silk route was opened ?Well the geopolitical scenario has witnessed a drastic change when the silk route was functioning decades ago. In fact Kashmir had become the centre for trading community who used to operate on the silk route carrying goods to and fro from Kashmir to Xinxiang. Now that Xinxiang is part of China it may not be allowed by China to operate the old silk route for promoting trade. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has advocated opening of traditional silk route connecting Kashmir with outside world particularly central Asian nations saying it can play the pivotal role in resolution of the Kashmir issue. It is a day dream for her and thank God reality has gripped her mind immediately when she has stated that" right now our geopolitical situation isn't feasible for opening traditional routes but then nothing is impossible. Opening of the Muzaffarabad road seemed impossible but then it was opened," Mehbooba ha said. She is right when she said opening of the silk route was also important because Kashmir's language, craft, cuisine, music and cultural heritage have come through this route.
"Kashmir was once the gateway to central Asia and that is why Mufti always dreamt of opening all the traditional routes, which are important to solve Kashmir issue," she said. Terming the buyer-seller meet as a new beginning towards opening of the traditional routes, Mehbooba said the event marks a step towards establishment of Kashmir as a major international trading market. Whatever may be the fate and future of the Kashmir's trading centre but one thing is certain that by reopening of traditional routes the Kashmir issue may not be settled. During the last seven to eight years several thousand people from Jammu and Kashmir visited Pakistan occupied Kashmir to meet their estranged relations. Several thousand people from occupied Kashmir have visited Jammu and Kashmir for embracing their estranged relatives but the Kashmir issue stands like a rock trying to bedevil the relations between India and Pakistan.
Well Uri-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalakot routes were reopened after Islamabad gave its nod. How can one expect China to reopen the silk route that could help traders to carry various goods to central Asia? Over the years Hindi-Chini Bhai era has been buried and Beijing as become an enemy of New Delhi. In fact China is trying to block India's case for permanent membership of the United Nations security Council. Beijing has tried to block declaring Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar, who lead two militant groups, LeT and JeM, as international terrorists. And when the US threatened Pakistan with suspension of Economic and Military aid for its weak role in eliminating terrorists Islamabad did not assure the US of its renewed efforts for tackling terrorists to motivate Trump to resume funding Pakistan. Islamabad showed no regrets because it had the assurance from China which had informed Pakistan that Beijing would make up for whatever losses Pakistan suffered owing to Donald Trump's plan. This way China poses a bigger threat to India than Pakistan. Hence China may not accept India's plan to reopen traditional silk route.
