| LMD raids booksellers, imposes fine for over pricing | | |  Ashwani Sharma

Udhampur, Apr 12: Deputy Commissio-ner Udhampur constituted a team of Legal Metrology department to check the over-pricing of school books by certain sellers.
The team conducted raids at various book shops and fined those over charging.
The team included Deep Singh, Anil Sharma distric pollution control officer , Arti Bardwaj assistant labour commissioner ,Jai dev Singh sambaya assistant Controler of LMD and others.
The raids were conducted at Rattan Stationery, National Book Depot , Gupta stationary mart and others. They also reached some shops selling school uniform allegedly at exorbitant rates, but the owners of shops pulled down their shutters and escaped.
Sources informed that certain private schools were not directly selling the books and notebooks to avoid action of the authorities and had outsourced the job to certain sellers in lieu of hefty commission.
These schools, including Common Public School, Happy Model Hr Sec School, Vivek Niketan, Maharaha Hari Singh School etc. were forcing the parents for purchasing the books and notebooks from the shops recommended by them.
During raids, the Legal Metrology team found that customers were not given any bill for the purchases made by them.
It was also found that small chits were pasted on books with exorbitant prices of books than their MRP. Locals have hailed the move of District administration.
When contacted, DC Udhampur Ravinder Kumar said that Schools indulging in such mal practices shall be booked under law. |
