Asifa issue may lead to fall of coalition Govt | BJP questions CB probe | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 12: PDP-BJP coalition government is in serious trouble. It could even fall sooner than later. The situation is such. The alleged Asifa murder case has strained the relations between the two coalition partners. The PDP, which is under pressure from its constituency, is insisting that the Crime Branch did a commendable job in a professional manner as far as the investigation into the Asifa case is concerned and has taken a firm stand that the said case will not be handed over to the CBI. The story of the BJP is no different. It is also under pressure from its Jammu constituency, which on Wednesday witnessed a massive bandh against it and the state government. The nature of pressure from its constituency could be measured from the fact that the BJP, which till April 8 opposed the demand of the people of Kathua for a CBI probe into the Rasana murder case, has done a complete U-turn and questioned the CM Mehbooba Mufti-controlled Home department's whole approach to the Asifa case, as also the very composition of the Crime Branch team that prepared the chargesheet against 8 accused persons. Taking a U-turn, BJP national general secretary RP Singh on Wednesday said in Delhi that the BJP was for a CBI probe, as such a probe alone could dispense justice to the victim and save the innocents from harassment and torture. Earlier J&K BJP general secretary (organization) Ashok Koul questioned the government's handling of the case. He said first the case was handled by local police, then SIT was constituted and finally the case was handed over to the Crime Branch. Ashok Koul was not the lone local BJP leader who questioned the approach of the state government to the murder case. J&K chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi went several steps further and questioned the very composition of the Crime Branch team and endorsed the apprehensions of the agitating people Hiranagar that the Crime Branch would not do justice to the case, as three of its members were from Kashmir belonging to a particular community. Questioning the composition of the Crime Branch team on April 8, Sunil Sethi said: "One of the members of the team investigating the Kathua case had been himself accused in the murder and rape cases of a Hindu boy and his sister. Irfan Wani, then in-charge Karara Police Post, Thathri Police Station was arrested in 2007 on the charges of murder of a boy and rape of a girl during their illegal custody. How can a person of such a character be associated with the present investigation? Though subsequently acquitted of the charges by the court, yet his being member of the investigating team raises doubts over the fairness of the investigation". On Wednesday, another state BJP spokesperson Virendra Gupta also took the plunge and declared that he supported Hindu Ekta Manch, which had been spearheading the movement in Hiranagar demanding CBI probe. All these four statement only suggest that the BJP was under tremendous pressure and that to save it constituency, it might harden its stand on the issue. It is this change of heart on the part of the BJP, which has raised serious doubts about the very existence of the PDP-BJP coalition government. |
