Ashwani Sharma Early times report Udhampur, Apr 22: Throwing norms to winds, children are engaged as labourers across district Udhampur. Children of the age between 8-14 can be easily seen working as waiters, dish washers in tea stalls, dhabas and as domestic aides with impunity as the concerned department continues to stay in slumber. According to reports, some children were rescued from their working places and admitted in schools but with the passage of time, poverty pushed them back to their old places of work. NGOs working for eradication of child labour do not do much despite funds they get from various quarters for eradication of child labour. However, concerned citizens seem genuinely worried about the growing trend. "It is very difficult to arrest the trend without police help," they said. However, others believe that the society must take a stand. "Leaving everything to the police won't help," they said. The DC, Ravinder Kumar said a team is being formed to rescue children from their work places. "The government intends to take strict action against the persons who employ children," he said. |
