Polls to Anantnag LS Seat: HC grants Union Home ministry more time 5/14/2018 11:09:15 PM Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 14: High Court today granted more time to the Union Home Ministry to file response to a petition, seeking directions for holding by-election to the Anantnag Lok Sabha seat. A single bench of the court comprising Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir granted the time after counsel representing it requested for some time to submit the response. The by-poll, earlier slated to be held on April 12 last year, was first postponed for May 25, 2017 following unprecedented protests and clashes and dismal voter turnout in Srinagar Lok Sabha segment on April 9 last year. Nine civilians were killed on the day of polling for the Srinagar-Budgam segment. The by-poll was later postponed indefinitely. In May last year, the Election Commission of India deferred the by-election for Anantnag parliamentary seat citing reasons that "free and fair poll was not possible due to prevailing ground situation and non-availability of sufficient security forces." In its order, the poll body rescinded the notification for the election after reports from the state administration and state's chief electoral officer that there had been "no noticeable improvement in the law and order situation in Anantnag parliamentary constituency." The high court was hearing a petition filed one Gulam Mohammad Wani of Pulwama, stating that the union government has "sabotaged" the election for Anantnag parliamentary constituency. He has also sought direction for a probe by a neutral agency. "Union Government for ulterior motives has sabotaged the process of elections as the requisition of additional forces from the state government for the purpose was not accepted by the central government," he pleaded. He stated that the law on the point was very clear as by-elections for a vacancy need to be filled within a period of six months from the date of creation of such vacancy.
