'Birbal' under scanner for suspension of flyover work | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 26: Minister for Public Works, Naeem Akter has come under scanner for mishandling execution of the Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover, something that has led to suspension of the work. The work on the prestigious flyover, to be longest in Kashmir, stopped three days after Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti inaugurated its first phase between Amar Singh College and Barzulla crossing on May 10. Official sources said that there are some payment issues between the workers and the contractor. The company is understood to have asked its workers and engineers to halt the work until the government doesn't settle "pending issues." The Simplex infrastructure, which is executing the work, had asked its workforce to stop work on the project as the government was allegedly "not working professionally." Sources said the firm has shot a letter to the state government saying that the latter has no work culture. Sources said the company has written a formal letter to the government in which it has highlighted "poor work culture and expressed unhappiness on working in such an environment." Officials said it was for the first time that a private firm has written such a harsh worded letter to the government. Officials said that the allegedly arrogant style of working of the incumbent works ministers is seen as a major cause of suspension of the work. "You cannot be arrogant all the times. At times you need to behave like a professional who looks at things from beyond the prism of hatred and arrogance," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity. He said the minister was informed will in-time about the inputs that the project executing firm would suspend work over pending issues. "Had the issues with the private firm been resolved well in time, there would be no suspension of work," said the senior official. The Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) is the executing agency, having outsourced the work to the Simplex Infrastructure Private Limited. The project estimated to be developed at the cost of Rs 350 crores by ERA has already missed several deadlines. Despite repeated attempts the works minister couldn't be contacted for comments. But he has told reporters that work on the flyover would resume soon. |
