Chaman Lal pays tributes to Dr SP Mookerji | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 22: Remembering Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerji on the eve of his 65th death anniversary, the former Union Minister, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta said that Dr. Mookerji was a great patriot and statesman. He always stood for equal treatment to all parts of the Country. His Kashmir mission was guided by these basic principles of the Constitution. But it was an irony that he was arrested on May 11, 1953 and detained in the huts of the gardeners of Nishat Bagh Srinagar in controversial circumstances. His death was announced on the early morning of June 23, 1953. All was shrouded in mystery. No enquiry held into his death despite demand by the aged mother and many others including the then Chief Minister of Bengal Dr. B.C Roy. The extent of ill-will of the then ruling clan against Dr. Mookerji and his outlook can be gauged that they even dismantled the huts where Dr. Mookerji was detained as many visitors to Nishat Bagh had started to reach and see this place. In place of these huts some other big structures have been raised there, he added and said that all this indicates that how much despotic was the then ruling dispensation of the State. Prof. Gupta said that because of the supreme sacrifice of Dr. Mookerji and long hard struggle of Praja Parishad led by Pt. Prem Nath Dogra have resulted in demolishing of many barriers between State and rest of India but still remains much to be done to complete the Kashmir mission of Dr. Mookerji. |
