In JK, 35k people get dirty drinking water | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 27: Despite incessant thrust of the Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation to provide safe drinking water to the people, more than 35 thousand rural population in Jammu and Kashmir is receiving contaminated drinking water. The latest data compiled by Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) till March 2018 has revealed that in J&K nearly 35 thousand population of rural areas has been drinking contaminated water (containing at least either fluoride, arsenic or iron). The date reveals that 15,958 habitation of rural areas receive piped water, 9,223 habitations (62.94 lakh populations) have been getting more than 40 litre per capita per day safe drinking water whereas 6,719 habitations (38.87 lakhs population) were getting less than 40 litre per capita per day safe drinking water through piped water supply. "The ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation provides financial and technical assistance to state government for drinking water supply under the centrally sponsored scheme National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP). But due to lackadaisical approach of bureaucracy and ministry concerned, nearly more than 16 habitation comprising of 35 thousand population are being compelled to consume unsafe water wherein contamination like fluoride or iron were found", the date revealed. |
