Reasi, Aug 24: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) concluded 13th Parthenium (Congress grass) Awareness Week which was attended by large number of school children, school teachers and farmers from different villages of Reasi distt. The programme was organised in different schools of Reasi district of J&K. During the programme various technical sessions were organised. The programme was organized under the guidance Associate Director Extension (ADE) and Incharge of KVKs of SKUAST-J, Dr. R.K. Arora. Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal while briefing the importance of programme said that Parthenium management has become a menace for the agricultural and non-agricultural areas as well as for the human beings, livestock, environment and biodiversity. He said that the Parthenium hysterophorus (congress grass) is an allergic, poisonous, pernicious, problematic, aggressive and deadly weed which is posing a serious threat to human beings, livestock, environment and biodiversity. He said that this dreaded weed is spreading in an alarming rate throughout the nation and collaborative efforts are needed to eradicate it. He narrated that the weed causes huge economical losses to the farmers as the weed affects up to 40 per cent of crops yields. He informed the participants about the introduction of weed in India and J&K, its biology, propagation, dispersal and status in the country and J&K. |
