JK contestants pool personal resources to attend national kickboxing championship | Participants, parents up in arms against Govt 'callousness' | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 4: Even as a young girl from Jammu and Kashmir made the entire country proud when she won the World Kickboxing Championship in 2016, the state government is allegedly least bothered about the promotion of the game. Officials said the national level kickboxing championship has commenced in Dehradun but that the team from Jammu and Kashmir is the only one, which is not enjoying any patronage from the state government at the event. Around two dozen sportsmen from the state, who are representing Jammu and Kashmir at the event, are understood to have gone there out of their own resources. Sources said the J&K Youth Services and Sports department and the Sports Council allegedly didn't show any interest towards the promotion of the event. The parents of some of the contesting wards while talking to Early Times said they took their kids to the event out of other own expenses. "All the students have come here out of their own resources as the Jammu and Kashmir Government is simply missing from the scene," the parents said. They said at the time of celebrating success of such events the government was among the first to appreciate it. "But when it comes to the promotion of the game our government is non-existent," the parents said. They said no official from the government side ever bothered to be present at the national event that is scheduled to conclude on January 7 in Uttar Akhand. "The only state which has no formal representation or sponsorship from the state government is Jammu and Kashmir," the parents said. In 2016, Tajamul Islam, then 7, scripted history by wining World Kickboxing Championship held in Italy. On November 9, she routed her opponent from United States of America in the finals of the World Kickboxing Federation (WKF) World Championship to become the world champion at the sub-junior level. "At the time of taking credit the government is first to come forward but when it comes to formally sponsor such an event, out government is nowhere," the contestants said. When contacted a senior official said that such events were not "formally listed in the events sponsored by the state." "Still the matter will be looked into as I have no inhand information about the issue," the official added. |
