Crackdown on JeI worries Mehbooba | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 23: The crackdown on Jamiat-e-Islami leaders by the police has worried the Peoples Democratic Party as the former had reportedly supported the latter in the earlier elections. Nearly 150 people, mainly from the Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir including its chief Abdul Hamid Fayaz, were detained during the intervening night of Saturday. In a statement, a JeI spokesman said the police and other forces launched a "mass arrest drive" during the intervening night of February 22 and 23 and arrested dozens of its central and district-level leaders. "Those detained include Ameer Jama'at Dr Abdul Hamid Fayaz, Advocate Zahid Ali (Spokesperson), Ghulam Qadir Lone (Former Secretary General), Abdur Rouf (Ameer Zila Islamabad), Mudasir Ahmad (Ameer Tehsil Pahalgam), Abdul Salam (Dialgam), Bakhtawar Ahmad (Dialgam), Mohammad Amin Wani (Tral), Bilal Ahmad (Chadoora), Ghulam Mohammad Dar (Chak Sangran) and dozens more," said the spokesman. While their arrests have not gone well within the PDP despite the Jamiat-e-Islami has been affiliated with separatist groups. It is the Jamiat-e-Islami, by whom support the PDP has won elections in the past. Sources said that during the PDP led government in the state Jamaat activists enjoyed the complete political patronage and carried out their activities without any fear. "Security agencies were very well aware about their activities but were unable to act against them as the politicians used to get them released," they added. "These activists were leaving no stone unturned to carry forward the indoctrination campaign and put the youth on the path of the radicalization," they added. Though Jamaat has been claiming that it's not affiliated with any militant outfit but it's an open secret that Hizbul-Mujahideen is directly linked with Jamaat. Many youth who have joined the Hizbul in the past few years were kin of Jamaat activists. PDP president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday questioned the legality of the crackdown on Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir leaders, saying the "arbitrary" move will only "precipitate matters" in the state. "In the past 24 hours, Hurriyat leaders & workers of Jamaat organisation have been arrested. Fail to understand such an arbitrary move which will only precipitate matters in J&K," Mehbooba tweeted. In the recent past, she has also visited the militant families. "I was invited by the family of the militant whose sister was harassed. I did not visit for electoral gains but a girl was being harassed there and it was question of honor," she had said. Mehbooba had said she wanted to send across a message that the families of the militants should not be harassed. |
