Scholarship scheme rolled out by Minority Affairs Ministry comes under scanner | | | Early Times Report
Kulgam, May 9: Scholarship cum merit- scheme rolled out by Union Ministry of Minority Affairs has come under scanner. The centrally sponsored scheme has been devised for professional technical courses. The large scale disparities in the final list of candidates have surfaced on national scholarship scheme website where scholarships have been sanctioned allegedly against hundreds of fake names and it certainly exposes the tall claims of clean, efficient and transparent governance. For south Kashmir's Kulgam district the ministry has sanctioned scholarship for Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000 in favor of 474 students studying in different parts of the country, however the list shows large scale discrepancies. The website shows that most of the candidates from Kulgam district belong to Mandal family and their parents have been shown as Muslims. Samrat Mandal son Mdesteyakalam with application number JK201819011021069 has been shown as Muslim and is studying at Vigyan Bharathi institute of technology Proddatur. An amount of Rs 30,000 has been sanctioned in his favour for pursing a 3 year course in Computer Science. Father's name of Samrat Mandal, another candidate, has been shown as Salim Akther, which is highly unlikely as Akther is prefixed with female names only. According to the website, the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs has sanctioned over 1.20 Cr under the scheme for Kulgam district for such 'fake' candidates. Local activists are demanding a probe into what they have termed as a "major scam." |
