Jammu, May 21:An awareness session cum symposium on "Need for conserving water bodies" was organized by "We The Human - Forum for Nature and Mankind" here today at Government Higher Secondary School, Pargwal. Prem Singh, an Environmentalist, Capt Lalit Sharma Retd Addl PCCF, Y S Manhas Principal Secretary Law (Retd), K K Sharma Director Floriculture (Retd), Principal of the school Neetu Gandotra delivered expert lectures on the serious issue of need for saving water bodies to a large gathering of students and prominent citizens of Pargwal area. All speakers were critical of the government authorities as well as our society leaders who are responsible of degrading quality of water in canals and rivers and decreasing level of water table. On one side we take Arti of Suryaputri Tawi, on the other side the people dump daily garbage, bad affluent water in river Tawi. Illegal sand mining is continued despite of the High Court intervention. The holy river Tawi, today, either stands encroached by all cross sections of people on all sides or being polluted with sewerage drains and dumping of solid waste/ bio medical waste, during night hours, the speakers said. Exhorting students to prevail upon the situation and launch a vigorous campaign against throwing of garbage or city drains in canals and rivers, the panel of speakers said that the government should also constitute a time bound high level committee headed by the respective Divisional Commissioners to retrieve back all water ponds, marshy land and forest areas which stand, today, encroached by the unscrupulous greedy elements of our society. Among the students who participated in the symposium, Kavita Manhas, Sonika Manhas and Isha Sharma were adjudged the winner, Ist runner up and second runner up. |
