UDHAMPUR, July 16: Hailing the decision of National Green Tribunal (NGT) of imposing a fine of Rs 2 crore each on Gammon Construction and Hindustan Construction Company for damaging the environment by dumping construction debris into Chenab and Tawi rivers, Former MLA & President Panthers Party Balwant Singh Mankotia demanded to act sternly on dumping city waste in river Tawi, Kheri near Jakheni, Udhampur. While addressing a press conference here today, Mankotia said that dumping of waste at Tawi river is a serious issue lingering for the last 4 years which is making environment polluted and putting general public at greater health risk. Dumping station is hardly 500 metre from the city and adjoining the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway from where the tourists from all across India pass which is also making a mockery of "Swachh Bharat" in Udhampur, he added. Expressing deep anguish, Mankotia said that since the waste from whole city is being dumped at Tawi River from where water supply is made to entire Udhampur adding that it is also causing environment pollution due to its burning. Mankotia disclosed that the people of the area are suffering on daily basis due to the dumping of the waste which is making environment unsafe for the locals and putting hazardous health issues. He said that dumping of debris in Tawi river also blocks the water pipelines due to which the water flow gets affected. Mankotia informs that on July 18 Panthers Party delegation will meet & submits memorandum to Chairman NGT at his office in New Delhi. |
